Gena-Musings Saturday Night Fun — Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:

  1. List your matrilineal line – your mother, her mother, etc. back to the first identifiable mother. Note: this line is how your mitochondrial DNA was passed to you!
  2. Tell us if you have had your mitochondrial DNA tested, and if so, which Haplogroup you are in.
  3. Post your responses on your own blog post, in Comments to this blog post, or in a Note or status line on Facebook.

Here’s my matrilineal line:

  • Kay Bauman nee Brown — me
  • Donna Brown nee Willis — living
  • Virginia Amy Willis Billings nee Lineberry — 1914-2007
  • Eva Lineberry Fox nee Keithley — 1883 – 1922
  • Martha Ann Keithley nee Conn (perhaps) — ca 1856 – ca 1890

We know very little beyond my grandmother Virginia because the previous generations of mothers died when their children were quite young. Virginia was 7 when her mother, Eva, died. Eva was about 6 when her mother, Martha, died. Thankfully, my grandmother had older siblings who shared things about their mother plus my grandmother remembered many things about her mother. Unfortunately, Eva was the the second oldest of her mother’s children and no memories, not even names were passed on to her children (that we’ve discovered). We’ve been told that Martha was Irish and that she died about 1890 after the birth of her last child.

I have not been able to learn when or where Martha died or who her parents were. I’m not sure if Conn is the correct last name nor am I sure if it is her maiden name. My mother and I have both written about our search for Martha on our blogs. We are open to any other ideas on where to look.

We have not done a mitochondrial DNA test. We are, however in the process of a Y-DNA test on my mother’s paternal side.
